The Trauma-Informed SLP

Promoting safety and empowerment for all

(and we mean all)

paradigm shift

Trauma-informed care is a paradigm shift away from pathological, "right/wrong" perceptions. Instead, it is focused on a person's overall health. It is a framework of how to interact in a supportive way to our clients, students, patients—and also colleagues, friends, and family—and even ourselves.

It actually includes A LOT things that are being actively discussed all the time: The neurodivergency movement; presuming competence; cultural competency; LGBTQA+ inclusivity; equity for all minorities; toxic work environments; professional burnout; etc…

Given it's large scope, it warrants further exploration, discussion, and education within our field. In fact, I think it should be enfolded into every aspect of  the graduate school curriculum--similar to bilingual training--because it is just as critical to know about.

“Trauma decontexutalized in a person looks like personality. Trauma decontextualized in a family looks like family traits. Trauma decontextualized in a people looks like culture."
